Built in the fall of 2008, the Great Plains Equestrian Sports Training Foundation is a great place for beginners to learn polo. It is operational from April 15th through November 1st of each year.
The Foundation is located just 5 miles south of Wichita on I35. The center is easily accessed from Wichita via the Kansas Turnpike. Head southbound on I35 and take Exit 39 Haysville/US-81/Derby. Exit the Turnpike west on 71st street. Proceed to the first intersection and take a left on S. Broadway. After heading South for approximately 2.8 miles, the entrance is on the left (East). If you are coming from the south, take Exit 33 Mulvane, turn left (west) to Highway 81, and go north about 3.2 miles.
All you need to bring is a sense of adventure and your boots (or hard soled, low-heeled shoes). Helmets, mallets, and a suitable mount will be provided. Optional items, if desired, are a pair of gloves and/or half chaps. Even if you have a very limited riding ability, there is a class to learn this very exciting sport. There is no age limit for beginners - many adults learn to ride and play polo later in life when they find they have more disposable time to pursue a new hobby.
Dan Healy, a nationally known polo instructor, comes to Wichita with a lifetime of polo experience and wants to share it with you. He has played professionally for more than twenty years and is now one of the USPA’s professional umpires, officiating USPA tournaments stateside as well as abroad. Whether you are an accomplished rider or someone who has only touched a horse once, give him a try. Dan can teach practically anyone. Dan says, “All you need is a pair of boots.”
